KUCCPS choices: connect your course to a career

Compare programmes by subject strengths, entry requirements, location, and the work you want to do. Make a shortlist before submitting choices, and confirm current placement dates and rules with KUCCPS.

  • Check the latest programme list and minimum requirements.
  • Keep alternative courses that still lead toward your interests.
  • Save your choices and application details before deadlines.

TSC & teacher tech literacy: a practical starting point

Build classroom confidence one repeatable task at a time: organize lesson files, prepare accessible slides, use approved learning platforms, and protect learner information. Always follow current TSC and school guidance.

  • Practise file management, email, and safe sharing.
  • Use technology to support a lesson objective, not distract from it.
  • Keep learner records private and devices updated.

HOW-TO / eCITIZEN03 / 11

How to start SHA registration through eCitizen

Use the official eCitizen directory to find the current Social Health Authority registration route. SHA says Kenyan citizens should have an ID; children need a birth certificate, while foreign residents and refugees need the relevant identity document.

  • Sign in at eCitizen, or create an account using its official registration flow.
  • Search for Social Health Authority or SHA and follow the service link shown there.
  • Enter the requested identity and household details, review them, and save the confirmation or reference number.

How to request a Police Abstract in Kenya

First search “Police Abstract” in the official eCitizen directory. Do not choose “Certificate of Good Conduct” by mistake: that is a different DCI service. Online availability may vary, so use only a service explicitly listed by the National Police Service.

  • If an official Police Abstract service is listed, sign in, follow its form, and keep the reference number and any instructions.
  • If it is not listed, report the incident at a police station; carry your ID and the relevant incident or loss details.
  • Ask the officer for the occurrence-book reference and how to collect the abstract. Never pay an unofficial agent.

HOW-TO / KRA iTAX05 / 11

How to check and pay a KRA penalty through iTax

Confirm what the charge relates to before paying. A penalty may depend on the tax obligation and period; this guide is for checking your account, not tax advice or a promise that a penalty can be waived.

  • Open iTax directly and sign in with your KRA PIN and password; never share an OTP or password.
  • Review your tax ledger or statement, the obligation, period, and any outstanding return or assessment.
  • If the amount is correct, use iTax’s payment-registration flow for the matching tax head and period, then pay using the generated slip’s current instructions.
  • If you disagree or need to ask about remission, contact KRA through its official help channels before paying; keep the response and payment receipt.

Starting on Upwork from Kenya: a practical first-month plan

Upwork connects clients with independent professionals, but a profile alone does not create income. Start with one service you can demonstrate, such as website fixes, graphics, spreadsheet cleanup, or video editing.

  • Build two or three original portfolio samples and describe the result you deliver.
  • Apply to closely matched jobs with a short, specific proposal and a realistic scope.
  • Agree milestones in the platform contract and check current fees, withdrawal methods, and tax obligations before relying on earnings.

Academic writing skills: earn ethically with research support

Writing and research skills can support legitimate services such as proofreading, citation formatting, transcription, literature searches, and editing a client’s own draft. Do not write graded assignments, fabricate sources, or help someone misrepresent authorship.

  • Choose one clearly defined service and make a sample using your own topic.
  • Agree in writing on scope, turnaround, revisions, confidentiality, and payment.
  • Check the institution’s rules before editing student work; keep sources and client files private.

Selling tech services to local Kenyan businesses

Small businesses often need a clear, bounded service more than a long list of skills. Examples include a simple website, product photography and graphics, a digital menu, or help setting up business email and backups.

  • Talk through the business goal and write down exactly what is included.
  • Quote in KES with deliverables, dates, revision limits, and support terms before starting.
  • Use a written approval process, protect client logins, and hand over files and ownership clearly.

LibreOffice or Google Docs for school and small-business work?

LibreOffice is a free desktop office suite that can work offline; Google Docs is useful for browser-based collaboration and shared documents. Your best choice depends on your data access, device, file formats, and who needs to edit with you.

  • Choose an offline-first tool when data or connectivity is unreliable; save a second copy of important work.
  • Choose shared cloud documents when several people need to comment or edit together.
  • Test formatting by exporting a sample to PDF or opening it on another device before sending.

Tech hub spotlight: what to look for before you visit

Communities such as iHub in Nairobi and SwahiliBox in Mombasa can be useful places to look for events, coworking, and peer networks. Programmes and access arrangements change, so check each hub’s current calendar and visitor information first.

  • Look for an event or programme that matches your goal and experience level.
  • Check whether registration, a fee, or advance booking is required.
  • Prepare a short introduction and one specific question for people you meet.

Choosing a web host in Kenya: compare the whole service

When comparing Kenya-facing providers such as HostAfrica, look beyond the first advertised price. A useful host should fit your site’s traffic and give you a clear path to backups, support, renewal pricing, and moving your domain or files later.

  • Compare renewal costs, storage limits, SSL, email, backup frequency, and restoration terms.
  • Ask how support is reached and whether migration help is included.
  • Keep your own domain access and an independent copy of the site backup.
